John Abenstein

John P. Abenstein, M.S.E.E., M.D. is a Consultant in the Department of Anesthesiology, an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, and on the faculty in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Mayo Clinic.

Prior to joining the staff at Mayo Clinic, Dr. Abenstein was an anesthesiologist in the U.S. Navy, and was deployed with the U.S. Marines on the USS Tarawa on Surgical Team 9. He has chaired Mayo’s Capital Equipment Committee, Acute Care Monitoring Committee, and Workstation Oversight Group. Currently, he Chair’s the Medical Equipment Technology Standardization Committee. He has been a long-standing member of the MN Blue Cross Blue Shield Medical Policy Committee and the State of Minnesota’s Medical Education and Research Costs Committee. He also chaired Minnesota’s Health Technology Advisory Committee.

He was a member of ASA’s Administrative Council from 2002 to 2016 and served as ASA President in 2015. Dr. Abenstein received his engineering degrees from Duke University and the University of Wisconsin. He received his medical degree from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, completed his Residency and Fellowship in Cardiac Anesthesiology at Chicago’s Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center, and is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. Dr. Abenstein and his wife, Sandra, live in Oronoco, MN., and have two children.
